USPS DIM divisor 139: what the July 2026 change means for poly mailers
Since July 12, 2026, USPS calculates dimensional weight with a divisor of 139 instead of 166 and rounds each dimension up to the next whole inch, the same method UPS and FedEx use. It only applies to packages over one cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches), so light products in large boxes pay more, while soft goods shipped in a snug poly mailer usually stay on actual weight.
What changed on July 12, 2026?
Two things changed at the same time for Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select:
- The divisor dropped from 166 to 139. Dimensional (DIM) weight is length × width × height in inches, divided by the divisor. A smaller divisor gives a higher DIM weight for the same box.
- Every dimension is rounded up to the next whole inch before the volume is calculated. A box measured at 12.2 × 10.8 × 6.1 in is now billed as 13 × 11 × 7 in.
The carrier then bills the higher of the actual weight and the DIM weight. This is the method UPS and FedEx already use for daily rates, so the three main US carriers now work the same way.
Which packages pay more?
USPS only applies DIM weight to packages larger than one cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches). Below that, you pay on actual weight, as before. The change hits light products shipped in large boxes:
| Package | Volume | Actual weight | Billed at divisor 166 | Billed at divisor 139 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14 × 12 × 8 in box | 1,344 in³ | 3 lb | 3 lb (under 1 ft³) | 3 lb (under 1 ft³) |
| 14 × 12 × 11 in box | 1,848 in³ | 3 lb | 12 lb | 14 lb |
Example figures as published by DCL Logistics; see the sources below.
Two pounds more per parcel adds up quickly over a peak season. And because dimensions are now rounded up, a box that was just under a cubic foot can move over the line.
Why poly mailers mostly stay out of it
A rigid box keeps its size whether it is full or half empty. A poly mailer takes the shape of what is inside. For soft goods, that changes the numbers in three ways:
- Less volume. A folded sweater in a 12 × 15.5 in mailer is a flat package a couple of inches thick, nowhere near one cubic foot.
- Less weight. A 12 × 15.5 in mailer at 2.5 mil weighs a fraction of an ounce. A corrugated box and void fill can easily add several ounces.
- No void fill. No air pillows or paper to buy, store and pack.
So the July change mostly affects what you ship in boxes. If part of your range is soft and unbreakable (apparel, textiles, soft accessories, many printed items), moving it into poly mailers can take those parcels off DIM weight entirely.
How to check your own packages
- List your 10 most-shipped products with their packed size and weight.
- Measure the box you use today and round each side up to the next inch.
- Compare box and mailer with our DIM weight calculator. It shows the billable weight for UPS, FedEx and USPS side by side.
- Check the ounce tiers. Under one pound, USPS Ground Advantage prices by ounce tier. Our ounce threshold checker shows whether the packaging pushes you into the next tier.
- Pick the right mailer size with the poly mailer size finder. A mailer that is too big wastes film; one that is too small bursts.
What we can do
We make poly mailers in our own factory in Istanbul, from extrusion to printing and converting. Every size and thickness is made to order, so the mailer can match your product rather than the other way round. We send a free sample kit to your US address, so you can pack and weigh your own products before you change anything.

Questions
When did the USPS DIM divisor change to 139?
On July 12, 2026, for Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select. The previous divisor was 166.
Does dimensional weight apply to every USPS package?
No. USPS applies dimensional weight only to packages larger than one cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches). Smaller packages are billed on actual weight.
How does USPS round package dimensions now?
Each dimension is rounded up to the next whole inch before the volume is calculated. A box of 12.2 × 10.8 × 6.1 in is measured as 13 × 11 × 7 in.
Do UPS and FedEx use the same divisor?
UPS and FedEx use 139 for daily rates, so the three carriers now calculate dimensional weight the same way. Negotiated contracts can use a different divisor.
Can a poly mailer replace every box?
No. Fragile, rigid or very heavy items still need a box. Poly mailers suit soft and unbreakable goods such as apparel, textiles, soft accessories and many printed products.
